Spring has officially arrived, encouraging many to spend more time outdoors. One excellent way to enjoy nature is by visiting a botanical garden. If you are unsure which one to choose, Longwood Gardens in Kennet Square, Pennsylvania, is a top recommendation. It was recently named the best botanical garden in the United States.
USA Today announced the results of its annual 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Longwood Gardens was selected as the country’s best botanical garden. The gardens were nominated by an expert panel and then voted on by readers.
Covering more than 1,100 acres, Longwood Gardens is one of the most popular botanical gardens in the nation. It features intricate fountains, classical architecture, and a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants. Visitors can explore topiary displays, an award-winning woodland garden, large meadows, and a waterlily court, among many other attractions.
Longwood Gardens was originally purchased in 1906 by industrialist Pierre S. du Pont. He bought the property to protect a collection of historic trees from being cut down for lumber. In 1907, he created the first garden—a 600-foot-long flower garden park that remains one of Longwood’s most beloved areas. Today, the gardens attract about 1.6 million visitors each year and are cherished by the local community.
