The Fleece Inn in Dolphinholme has been named the Best Pub in the UK at a national awards ceremony held this week at the House of Lords in London.
After winning the regional award for the North in April, the pub advanced to the national stage, where it earned the top honor. The Countryside Alliance Awards, often referred to as the “Rural Oscars,” celebrate rural businesses that make significant contributions to their communities and the countryside.
Judges praised The Fleece Inn for its role as a community cornerstone, saying, “Rescued from decline by a local resident, the pub has been beautifully refurbished and thoughtfully extended, transforming it into a welcoming hub for surrounding villages.” The pub not only serves locally sourced food and hosts community events but also opened a village shop when the previous one closed. The shop, initially run by volunteers, is now supported by the pub’s staff.
Once owned by Lancaster-based Mitchells brewery, The Fleece Inn was saved from closure by the Worthington family, who bought it with hopes of preserving the village’s vital gathering space. After significant investment, the pub reopened in 2016 with nine modern bedrooms, a kitchen, and a community shop selling local goods.
Simeon Worthington, Company Director, expressed gratitude to the team and patrons, saying, “This win is thanks to our community-focused approach and dedication to quality. We’re breaking the mold in hospitality by creating a warm, friendly atmosphere.”
He added, “This award belongs to our entire community—from our loyal customers to our dedicated team. Most of them have been with us since we reopened ten years ago. And what makes this win even more special? We don’t even know who nominated us!”
The Fleece Inn’s recognition highlights its deep connection with both locals and visitors alike.
