Maido, a restaurant in Lima, Peru, has been crowned the No. 1 restaurant in the world for 2025, according to the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. The honor marks a significant achievement for chef Mitsuharu ‘Micha’ Tsumura, who founded the restaurant. Maido overtook last year’s top contender, Disfrutar from Barcelona, to claim the top spot.
Spanish restaurants continue to dominate, with Asador Etxebarri from Axpe securing the No. 2 position and Madrid’s Diverxo in fourth place. Mexico City’s Quintonil takes third. Copenhagen’s Alchemist completes the Top 5 rankings, while Gaggan, located in Bangkok, earned the title of Asia’s best restaurant at No. 6.
The 2025 list was revealed in a ceremony held in Turin, Italy, on June 19, and highlights eateries from 32 cities across 22 countries. The rankings include 10 new entries and four returning restaurants.
Maido, which takes its name from a Japanese greeting, has increasingly incorporated ingredients and cooking traditions from the Peruvian Amazon into its dishes. Signature offerings include pork jowl and palm heart parcels, sustainable paiche fish snacks, and yucca, all reflecting the region’s rich natural resources.
