Smithills Open Farm in Bolton has been recognised as one of the top farm parks in the United Kingdom, according to a new ranking by holidaycottages The site, known for its detailed travel recommendations, included Smithills on its list based on insights from regional experts with direct experience of each location.
The recognition comes as interest in farm visits continues to grow, with online searches for “farm day out” rising by 42% in the past month. Families are increasingly looking for engaging outdoor activities, and farm parks are proving to be a popular choice.
Smithills Open Farm was highlighted for its accessible layout and strong focus on both animal welfare and education. The farm features a wide variety of animals, including traditional farm animals like cows, sheep, and ponies, as well as more exotic species such as meerkats, Burmese pythons, and skunks. Visitors can take part in interactive experiences like bottle-feeding calves and lambs, watching milking demonstrations, and attending daily animal talks.
In addition to its animal-focused activities, the farm offers a range of leisure facilities. These include a large adventure playground, an inflatable assault course, indoor play areas, donkey rides, and tractor tours. Families can also enjoy homemade ice cream made on-site using milk from the farm’s own cows. Over the years, the farm has received several awards, including the People’s Choice Award at the North West Family Business Awards in 2024. It also has a holiday cottage on-site, offering guests exclusive access to the animals during their stay.
The ranking by holidaycottages was compiled by local experts based on their knowledge of family-friendly attractions, rather than using online review data. Their aim was to identify places that offer high-quality experiences and are especially popular with families.
Other farm parks named in the ranking include Matlock Farm Park in Derbyshire, Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo in South Wales, Tattershall Farm Park in Lincoln, Mabie Farm Park in Dumfries, Bocketts Farm Park in Surrey, and Cotswold Farm Park in Gloucestershire.
Shannon Keary, digital PR manager at holidaycottages said many families are looking to enjoy the outdoors as summer approaches, and a day at a farm park provides the perfect opportunity. She said farm visits offer a chance to learn about British farming, interact with animals, and enjoy a variety of hands-on activities, making them an ideal option even when the weather is unpredictable.
