Florida is famous for its alligators, but few may know that one of its native species holds multiple world records. According to Guinness World Records, the American alligator has been recognized for its unique characteristics.
The American alligator was named the “noisiest crocodilian.” Its bellowing sounds can reach up to 92 decibels, which is nearly as loud as standing next to a small propeller airplane. These calls can be heard clearly from up to 150 meters away during the breeding season. Scientists explain that because the alligator’s swampy habitat limits visual communication, it has evolved to use loud vocalizations to attract mates. Interestingly, the alligator produces these powerful sounds without vocal cords by forcefully expelling air from its lungs.
The American alligator also holds the record for being the “most maternal crocodilian.” Female alligators can care for their young for up to four years, much longer than other crocodilian species. During this period, mothers and offspring communicate frequently through vocalizations. However, as the young grow older, the mother’s behavior changes and she may become aggressive to encourage them to leave and become independent.
Despite these remarkable traits, experts warn that it is best to avoid encounters with alligators, especially when females are protecting their young.
