EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Eau Claire has been named the best city to live in Wisconsin and ranks 49th among 250 cities nationwide, according to U.S. News and World Report. The publication’s list highlights Eau Claire’s appeal and growing reputation across the country.
David Minor, CEO and president of the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce, encouraged people to invite family and friends to experience the city. He pointed to the scenic rivers, numerous paved trails, and overall quality of life as key reasons why Eau Claire stands out.
Minor also noted that the recognition could attract businesses looking to expand and draw more visitors to the city, which now has a population of over 70,000. “Hands down, this helps every aspect of what we do,” he said.
Some have questioned whether Eau Claire is growing too quickly. Aaron White, the city’s community development director, said he does not believe the growth rate is too fast but acknowledged that the city must adapt to this rapid change.
One challenge is the low housing vacancy rate, which is currently below 5 percent. This tight market makes affordable housing harder to find, especially for low-income residents.
“We are actively working on programs,” White said. “We’re exploring ideas from other communities to see what could work in Eau Claire.”
Eau Claire is continuing its efforts to revitalize the city, once known for its sawmill industry. Minor recalled that downtown Eau Claire looked very different just 20 years ago. “There was nothing here,” he said.
Affordable housing remains a priority in the city’s capital investment plan. The city council is also considering zoning changes to help builders create more affordable housing options.
White added that the city’s growing recognition will help when requesting more funding from state legislators in Madison.
