As summer arrives and temperatures rise, Michigan’s beaches provide the perfect escape to enjoy sun, sand, and cool waves. For many residents and visitors, a day at the beach is made even better with a four-legged companion.
Across the state, dozens of beaches welcome dogs, offering pet owners a wide range of locations to enjoy outdoor fun with their furry friends. From Lake Michigan’s sweeping shores to more secluded inland spots, dog-friendly options are easy to find.
Beaches that allow dogs include Agate Beach Park in Toivola, North Street Beach in Leland, Van’s Beach, and Peterson Park in Northport, as well as Grand Marais Public Beach in Grand Marais. Other notable destinations include Horseshoe Harbor Beach in Copper Harbor, Ottawa Sands County Park in Spring Lake, and Belle Isle Beach in Detroit.
Some beaches, such as Esch Road Beach in Honor and First Street Beach in Manistee—recently ranked the top beach in Michigan—have earned praise for their scenic views and welcoming atmosphere for pets. From Ludington’s Loomis Street Dog Beach to the quiet trails near Christmas Cove Beach in Northport, each location offers its own mix of natural beauty and pet-friendly access.
In addition to public beaches, Michigan’s state park system includes many areas where dogs are permitted. Among them are Burt Lake State Park in Indian River, Grand Mere State Park in Stevensville, Leelanau State Park in Northport, and Silver Lake State Park in Mears. These parks provide visitors with a chance to enjoy hiking trails, campsites, and waterfront views alongside their pets.
While dogs are welcome in many parts of the state’s park system, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds visitors to follow guidelines. Dogs must be kept on a six-foot leash, under supervision at all times, and cleaned up after. They are not allowed on designated swim beaches, in areas marked for endangered species protection, or in other restricted zones.
Michigan’s parks, forests, trails, and harbors also allow pets during camping trips, giving travelers even more options for pet-friendly adventures throughout the season.
