The integration of 5G-A and AI technology marks the beginning of the mobile AI era, significantly expanding connectivity between individuals, homes, and industries. This transformation is driving core networks to extend their reach and meet the growing demands of users, businesses, and AI systems.
Leading the way, China Mobile and Huawei have introduced AI into core networks to support intelligent applications. The development of the AI Core Network occurs in two stages. The first phase focuses on building a 5G-A intelligent core network with AI agents, which enhances network intelligence and enables intelligent services, user experiences, and operations and maintenance (O\&M). This phase also addresses the challenges of computing power and energy consumption by integrating computing and network capabilities. The second phase involves evolving the core network into an AI-native system known as the Agentic Core. This next-level network will be self-generating, self-optimizing, and self-maintaining, able to adapt dynamically to diverse, real-time service needs.
China Mobile has already implemented several innovative AI-powered services, including New Calling, which has been commercially launched in China. These services offer features like Visualized Voice Calling, Fun Calling, and Real-time Translation. For network intelligence, the Intelligent Personalized Experience (IPE) solution has been deployed across multiple provinces, allowing operators to shift from traffic-based monetization models to experience-based ones. Additionally, AI-driven operations and maintenance (O\&M) intelligence have been integrated into production systems, improving the efficiency of fault management, complaint handling, and overall customer experience. Notably, China Mobile’s Zhejiang branch has pioneered the use of AI agents for managing faults and handling complaints. The company is also collaborating with Huawei to develop a low-carbon core network that enhances energy efficiency at the system level.
George Gao, President of Huawei’s Cloud Core Network Product Line, emphasized, “Integrating AI into the core network is a key feature of the mobile AI era. The AI Core Network will create a platform for innovation, paving the way for the shift from intelligent connectivity of things to the intelligent connectivity of AI agents. Huawei, in collaboration with China Mobile and industry partners, aims to develop more innovative services, empower various industries, and generate greater business value.”
Huawei will showcase its latest products and solutions at MWC Shanghai 2025, which will take place from June 18 to 20 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC). As the adoption of 5G-Advanced continues to accelerate in 2025, Huawei is working with global telecom carriers, industry experts, and leaders to explore how AI can reshape telecom services, infrastructure, and operations, opening up new revenue streams and advancing the transition to a smarter, more connected world.
