The Maui Humane Society is continuing its efforts to reunite lost pets with their owners, and a new partnership with Best Friends Animal Society is offering a promising solution. The organization has been selected as one of 25 shelters nationwide to participate in a program called Network Neighbors, designed to help more lost animals find their way home.
This initiative uses Petco Love Lost technology, which incorporates image recognition software to match photos of lost pets with its extensive database. Victoria Ivankic, a spokesperson for the Maui Humane Society, expressed excitement about the program’s potential to reunite pets with their families.
“Our belief is that there are no stray animals,” Ivankic said. “Every pet that comes into our care—except for community cats—has a home at some point. We prefer to refer to them as lost. So any new efforts to help reunite these animals with their families are something we fully support.”
The shelter already has a dedicated pet reunification specialist, who works tirelessly to track down pet owners. This specialist utilizes social media and dives deep into the shelter’s records to locate lost pets’ families. The partnership with Best Friends Animal Society is seen as an additional tool to increase success in reunifications.
If the pilot program proves successful, it could expand to more communities across the country, potentially helping thousands of pets return to their homes.
