North Jersey is home to some of the most breathtaking and underrated scenic spots in the United States. Recently, three local destinations were named among USA Today’s “Most Treasured Views” as part of a nationwide project showcasing America’s hidden gems. These sites, each offering a unique blend of history and natural beauty, highlight the diverse landscapes of North Jersey. Here are the top three spots you shouldn’t miss:
Paterson Great Falls is one of the country’s most stunning waterfalls, with a dramatic 77-foot drop into the Passaic River. This natural wonder, which has stood since the city’s founding in 1792, holds both National Natural Landmark and National Historic Landmark status. Although the walking bridge, once the best viewing spot, is currently closed for safety reasons, visitors can still enjoy incredible views from Overlook Park or Mary Ellen Kramer Park. While you’re in the area, consider visiting the Paterson Museum, located nearby, to learn about the city’s role as America’s first planned industrial city. Admission is free, though donations are encouraged.
Situated on the highest point of the Palisades Cliffs, State Line Lookout offers sweeping views of the Hudson River and New York City’s skyline. Just one mile south of the New York State border, the lookout is a prime spot for bird watching and is one of New Jersey’s 14 designated hawk-counting locations. The adjacent Lookout Inn serves meals and snacks for those spending the day at the park, which also boasts over 30 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging rock scrambles. Parking is metered year-round, but the first hour is free.
Branch Brook Park, known for having the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the country, offers a spectacular springtime display. With 5,300 trees across 360 acres, the park is particularly stunning during the peak bloom in April. The Cherry Blossom Welcome Center provides visitors with exhibits and galleries showcasing the history of cherry blossoms in Newark. Free parking is available at the Welcome Center and throughout the park.
