The Maltings in Warrington was named the best dog-friendly pub in the North West. This year, the question remains whether it can hold on to that top spot.
A new competition is underway where one lucky person will be paid £6,000 to take their dog on a nationwide, four-week road trip. They will visit pubs across the UK and help choose a new winner for each region, including a fresh champion for the North West.
The opportunity comes as new research from Rover reveals that 90% of British dog owners consider their dog their ideal work companion. In fact, Rover’s survey shows a growing desire among Brits for jobs that involve animals. Being a dog walker or sitter is the most popular dream job, chosen by 30% of respondents.
With pub garden season starting, Rover.com—the world’s largest online marketplace for pet care—has launched applications for what it calls “The Great British Pup Crawl.” The winner will become the Public House Officer, traveling the country with their dog to find the most dog-friendly pubs.
The role pays £6,000 plus £1,000 in expenses. The chosen candidate will visit up to 110 pubs during a four-week road trip in July. They will rate each pub on dog-friendly features such as water stations for dogs and pet treats at the bar.
Applicants must be confident and sociable dog owners with at least one well-behaved dog. They should be willing to travel extensively, have strong communication skills, be active on social media, and enjoy pub culture.
The research also shows that dogs rank higher than siblings, partners, and even best friends as dream colleagues. Around 81% of dog owners say their pets improve their mood more than any co-worker could, thanks to their calming presence and ability to make owners smile even on tough days.
The study highlights a strong national wish to work with animals and travel. About 82% say their dream job would involve animals, and 90% want to explore new places. Two-thirds say they would quit their current job instantly for one that lets them spend all day with dogs.
Besides dog walker or sitter, other top dream jobs include pub tester (22%), vet (20%), photographer (15%), and entrepreneur (13%). Some still hold on to childhood dreams like acting (9%) and sports (8%).
Rover’s canine behaviourist Adem Fehmi advises that taking dogs to pubs is a great way to bond and socialize, as long as the environment suits the dog’s personality. Ideal pubs offer calm, quiet spaces, both indoors and outdoors, away from busy areas. Extras like water bowls, dog beds, poo bags, and special treats or menus make a big difference. Friendly staff who understand dogs also improve the experience. But above all, owners know their pets best and should choose places where their dogs feel safe and welcome.
