Two European beaches have been named among the top 10 in the world, praised for their untouched beauty and natural charm in the latest ranking by The World’s 50 Best Beaches.
As travelers begin planning their summer getaways, the list stands out for looking beyond typical beach clichés and focusing on serene, nature-rich destinations.
More Than Just Pretty Views
The annual ranking goes deeper than just golden sands and clear waters. It highlights beaches that offer peaceful surroundings, unspoiled landscapes, wildlife, and a sense of solitude.
To compile the list, the organization consults thousands of experienced travel professionals worldwide. These experts nominate their favorite beaches, sharing what makes each one special. The final list is refined with input from “Beach Ambassadors”—seasoned travelers with a passion for nature and the sea.
Beaches are judged on factors like natural setting, wildlife presence, limited crowds, calm waters, and environmental conservation efforts.
Italy’s Cala Goloritzé Tops the List
The number one beach in the world—and Europe—is Cala Goloritzé in Sardinia, Italy. Nestled along the Baunei Coast, it features a striking 143-meter limestone pinnacle and clear blue waters perfect for swimming.
Its real charm, however, lies in its preservation. Declared a natural monument in the 1990s, the beach is protected by strict access rules. Visitors can only arrive by hiking or by swimming from boats anchored 200 meters away, keeping the area free from crowds and boat traffic.
Greece’s Fteri Beach Ranks Fourth Globally
Fteri Beach on the Greek island of Kefalonia came in fourth place. Hidden in a remote cove, it can only be reached by boat or a steep hike, which helps preserve its peaceful and pristine atmosphere.
Surrounded by white cliffs and turquoise waters, Fteri offers a quiet escape for nature lovers. Its untouched look and soothing environment make it ideal for those seeking a deeper connection with nature.
More European Beaches in the Global Top 20
Two more European beaches earned spots in the global top 20.
Voutoumi Beach on Antipaxos, Greece, ranked 16th. Accessible mainly by boat, it features warm, shallow waters and a mix of pebbles and white sand beneath green hills.
Playa de Rodas in the Cíes Islands, Spain, ranked 18th. Known for its Caribbean-like feel, the beach is backed by pine forests and sand dunes. It offers calm Atlantic waters and can only be reached by boat, ensuring a peaceful, crowd-free visit.
