Bossier City’s Animal Control Shelter has officially earned the “No-Kill Shelter” status, Mayor Tommy Chandler announced on Friday, June 13. This recognition, granted by the nationally respected Best Friends Animal Society, makes Bossier City the only shelter in North Louisiana to hold this rare distinction.
The announcement took place during a press conference at the shelter, where Mayor Chandler praised the shelter staff for their hard work and dedication. “This is proof that Bossier City is committed not only to the safety and care of our citizens but also to the safety and care of our animals,” he said. “This honor reflects our city’s compassion and the tireless efforts of our shelter team.”
To qualify as a “No-Kill” shelter, a facility must maintain a live release rate of at least 90 percent. This means that most animals entering the shelter are adopted, transferred to other organizations, or returned to their owners instead of being euthanized.
Mayor Chandler highlighted the innovation and dedication of the Animal Control team. “This achievement shows who we are as a community,” he said. “We care deeply about both our people and our pets.”
The Best Friends Animal Society is a national leader in the no-kill movement and recognizes shelters that meet this high standard as models for others.
During the press conference, the Mayor also encouraged residents to support the shelter by adopting pets, volunteering, and practicing responsible pet ownership.
The event ended with applause for the shelter staff, who have worked hard to improve conditions, increase adoptions, and build strong partnerships with rescue groups across the region.
With this new status, Bossier City now leads North Louisiana in animal welfare, setting a strong example of compassionate and community-driven care for shelter animals.
