As people prepare to retire, choosing the right location to enjoy those golden years becomes crucial, especially since many will spend about a third of their lives working. According to the latest findings from the International Living’s Global Retirement Index, Panama ranks as the top destination for retirees. The index, which draws insights from real-world experiences of retirees, highlights the country’s low cost of living, favorable visa conditions, and a temperate climate as key factors for its appeal.
Jess Ramesch, a contributor to the report, describes Panama as a “safe, stable, and wealthy country” and shares her experience of living there. “I live a California lifestyle—only better,” she writes, noting her proximity to the ocean and a short flight to Miami. Ramesch appreciates the absence of worries about hurricanes or high property taxes, while enjoying the sunny weather nearly every day and affordable medical care. The social aspect is also significant, as she has formed lasting friendships with both expats and locals, whom she now considers family.
Following Panama in the rankings are Portugal and Costa Rica in second and third place, respectively. Mexico and France complete the top five, making them other popular options for those seeking a comfortable and affordable retirement. Other countries in the top 10 include Spain, Malaysia, Greece, Italy, and Thailand.
These destinations offer retirees a combination of affordable living, good healthcare, and vibrant communities, making them ideal spots to spend retirement years in comfort and peace.
