England continues to attract millions of visitors each year, offering everything from historic castles and monuments to modern food tours, shows, and museums. But it’s not just international tourists enjoying these attractions—domestic tourism is thriving too. Last year, Britons took 906 million day trips and 90 million overnight stays within the country.
For those seeking inspiration for their next staycation, VisitEngland has announced the winners of its annual Awards for Excellence, which celebrate the best in English tourism.
This year’s top prize for best visitor experience went to an unexpected contender—Dumble Farm in East Yorkshire.
Located in the village of Arram, near Beverley, Dumble Farm offers a unique “Cow Cuddling & Highland Cow Experience.” The working farm focuses on conservation and sustainability, and is home to a herd of more than 65 Highland cows.
The experience gives guests the chance to spend over three hours getting close to these gentle animals. Visitors begin by meeting and grooming younger cows before moving on to the adult “cuddle cows,” which are known for their calm, affectionate nature. Guests are even encouraged to lie down beside the animals and relax.
The tour also includes a safari around the farm, with opportunities to feed the cows from a trailer. The experience ends with tea and cakes. Tickets cost £95, with proceeds supporting the farm’s conservation efforts.
According to Dumble Farm, spending time with the cows helps reduce stress and improves well-being. The rare Highland breed is also an important part of their educational mission.
Reviews of the experience have been overwhelmingly positive. One visitor described it as the “best day ever,” while another wrote, “Don’t think about it—do it.” A third called the experience “moo-sively impressive.”
Due to high demand, tickets are released monthly and tend to sell out quickly. However, cow cuddling is paused during the summer months and will resume in the autumn.
For those looking to unwind in nature and enjoy a memorable, hands-on encounter with animals, Dumble Farm might be the perfect place.
