Two of Illinois’ most iconic roadways have been recognized among the nation’s best scenic drives, according to the results of a recent USA Today reader poll.
The poll, part of USA Today’s annual “10Best” travel series, asked readers to vote on their favorite scenic routes across the United States. When the votes were tallied, two Illinois-based drives earned spots in the top 10—underscoring the state’s appeal to road trip enthusiasts.
Route 66 Ranked No. 5
One of America’s most legendary highways, Historic Route 66, claimed the No. 5 position. Often referred to as the “Mother Road,” Route 66 stretches from Chicago to Los Angeles, with its Illinois segment offering a nostalgic journey through classic diners, vintage motels, and small-town charm.
While the full route spans eight states, many travelers consider the Illinois stretch to be among the most memorable. Towns such as Pontiac, Joliet, and Litchfield are home to roadside attractions and restored gas stations that preserve the spirit of mid-century Americana.
Great River Road Named No. 1
Topping the list at No. 1 is the Great River Road, a National Scenic Byway that traces the path of the Mississippi River for over 3,000 miles across 10 states. Illinois is home to some of the route’s most picturesque sections, particularly near the historic towns of Alton and Grafton.
Winding alongside the river’s edge, the Illinois portion of the Great River Road offers sweeping views of bluffs, wetlands, and wildlife refuges. The route is a favorite among motorcyclists and casual road-trippers alike for its tranquil scenery and vibrant river towns.
Road Trip Potential in Illinois
The inclusion of both Route 66 and the Great River Road in USA Today’s top 10 list highlights Illinois’ continued appeal as a road trip destination. These drives offer more than just scenery—they offer a cultural journey through America’s heartland.
Travel experts and local tourism boards have praised the ranking as a boost for regional travel. “It’s a great reminder that you don’t have to leave the Midwest to experience some of the best drives in the country,” said a spokesperson from the Illinois Office of Tourism.
